Trying to live more sustainably doesn’t mean you have to change everything all at once. You don’t need to sell your car and grow all your own food — unless you want to, in which case, I admire your energy.
For the rest of us, small changes add up. Here are a few easy, low-stress swaps that can make a difference without making life more complicated. I’ve linked everything in a handy Benable list right here, so you can browse and pick what fits your life best.
1. Say No to Single-Use Plastics
Swap plastic water bottles for a reusable stainless steel one. Bring your own bags. Use glass containers instead of takeout tubs with mysterious lids that never quite fit. Small habits like these can save a ton of waste over time.
2. Go Bottle-Free in the Bathroom
Shampoo bars and bar soap are getting a glow-up these days. They last longer, take up less space, and come without the plastic guilt. Bonus: they look nice sitting out.
3. Cover Food Without Cling Wrap
Beeswax wraps and silicone stretch lids are a clever way to keep leftovers fresh without relying on single-use plastic wrap. I haven’t tried them myself yet, but I really like the idea—especially for cutting down waste in the kitchen.
4. Eat a Little Greener
Going meatless a few times a week doesn’t have to be complicated. I’ve started swapping out hamburger for canned beans in some meals, and it’s been an easy, budget-friendly change. Picking up a plant-based cookbook can be a great way to find more simple meal ideas to try.
5. Create a Reuse Box
Keep a box for jars, ribbons, padded envelopes, and other things you might normally toss. You’ll be surprised how often you find a second life for them.
6. Start Composting (Yes, Even in an Apartment)
You don’t need a big yard to get started. A little countertop bin and compostable liners can ease you into the habit — and when you’re ready, you can level up with an outdoor composter.
7. Make Your Own Cleaner
White vinegar, baking soda, and a reusable spray bottle: that’s pretty much it. You can save money, skip the harsh chemicals, and still get things clean.
8. Ditch Disposable Paper Goods
Cloth napkins and reusable paper towel alternatives (“unpaper” towels) look nice, feel nicer, and save money in the long run.
9. Do Cold Water Laundry
It works just as well with the right detergent. Add wool dryer balls to your laundry routine and ditch the dryer sheets for good.
10. Switch to LEDs
Not exactly revolutionary advice, but still one of the easiest ways to lower your electricity bill. And you don’t have to do it all at once — just replace bulbs as they burn out.
